Chin surgery (mentoplasty)

Chin correction is a purely cosmetic procedure. A recessed chin is often accompanied by a problem of occlusion. The upper and lower teeth do not overlap correctly because the lower jaw is positioned too far back. This problem can only be improved with the advancement of the entire jaw. This procedure is quite invasive and often requires keeping the mouth closed for several weeks. This procedure must be performed by a dental surgeon after an orthodontist has placed the teeth in the correct position. For people who have properly positioned teeth and do not wish to undergo a serious operation, a chin implant is a good and simpler alternative.
The implant itself is a small piece of silicone available in various thicknesses and widths. During the consultation, the surgeon will make a full-size computer simulation to determine which implant is best for you. We estimate that the chin will increase about half the thickness of the implant. An implant of 6mm in thickness enlarges the chin by about 3mm. The implant is inserted through an incision under the chin or the mouth. The latter method leaves no visible scar, but has a slightly higher risk of infection. The prosthesis is inserted under the chin muscles, usually under the periosteum of the jaw. The procedure can be done under local anaesthesia and holds few risks. If the implant is placed through the mouth, it is possible that the lower lip is a little stiff at first. A compress is placed on the chin during the first weeks to hold the implant in place.
