Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Everybody sweats, but people with hyperhidrosis produce more sweat than is necessary to maintain their body temperature level. Ordinary daily activities become more difficult and this can become troublesome at a professional or social level. Diabetes and thyroid problems are sometimes the cause and must then be treated.

What causes excessive sweating?

Abundant sweating is caused by a type of overactive sweat gland; the eccrine gland. These glands are located all over the body, but are concentrated in some areas, including under the arms.

Factors that can lead to excessive sweating:

  • Movement
  • The heat or cold
  • Alcohol, coffee or tea
  • Hot or spicy food
  • Stress, fear and strong emotions
  • Diabetes, thyroid problems

How to treat hyperhidrosis?

Muscle relaxant (as used for wrinkles) is an approved treatment against excessive sweating armpits. Once injected, the innervation of the sweat glands is blocked. Sweat production significantly decreases or stops. This effect lasts six months.
